Best Web Analytics Tools for SaaS: From Traffic to Paying Customer
Choose a coherent analytics stack for acquisition, product behaviour and subscriptions, without buying three tools to answer the same question.

Four different jobs, not one giant software category
The best web analytics tool for a SaaS company is the one that answers the acquisition question reliably. It does not have to be your product analytics system, billing ledger and subscription model as well. Treating all four as interchangeable is how a team ends up paying for overlapping charts while still being unable to connect a campaign to a customer.
Start with the decision. “Which landing page attracts qualified trials?” is an acquisition question. “Which action helps a new account activate?” is a product question. “Why did MRR fall?” is a subscription question. “Which campaign led to verified first payments?” crosses acquisition and revenue.
How we put this comparison together
We build Premely, so we have a perspective. This comparison uses current official documentation, not a paid ranking or an independently benchmarked score. Provider marks identify the products and do not imply endorsement. Features, plans and integration availability can change; check the linked sources before purchasing.
| Category | Primary question | Examples to evaluate |
|---|---|---|
| Traffic-to-revenue | Which acquisition evidence links to payments? | Premely, DataFast, or a maintained data pipeline |
| Web acquisition | Where did demand arrive and which pages converted? | Premely, Plausible, Fathom, Umami, GA4 |
| Product analytics | What do people do inside the product? | PostHog; a carefully configured event-analysis system |
| Subscription analytics | How do recurring revenue, expansion and churn change? | ChartMogul |
These are roles, not exclusive boxes. A product may cover more than one. The useful test is whether its actual implementation answers the question at an acceptable cost and level of detail, not whether its marketing page contains the category name.

How this recommendation works
Premely does not automatically win. Each selected priority adds three points when it matches our editorial fit assessment. An unscored priority does not mean a product lacks that feature. Hosting is a hard filter; this shortlist compares hosted editions of Plausible and PostHog, not community editions. Product depth adds six points for a product question; suitable acquisition scope and simpler setup add two each. A matching payment connection and privacy model add four each. Ties remain ties, with Premely shown first when its score is equal. These weights express a decision aid, not measured product quality. Plan gates and implementation effort still need checking.

A small founder-led SaaS
Start with acquisition, one meaningful activation event and verified first payments. A focused traffic-to-revenue tool can be enough for weekly marketing decisions. Keep subscription accounting in a system that understands recurring revenue rather than deriving MRR by multiplying every payment by twelve.
A product-led team with engineering support
Add product analytics when you need to investigate adoption, activation and retention inside the application. Define person and account identity before collecting hundreds of events. For a B2B product, five people from one paying workspace should not silently become five acquired customers.
A mature subscription business
Use a dedicated subscription model when expansion, contraction, pauses and churn are core planning inputs. Keep its accounting definitions separate from an acquisition report. A campaign can bring a new account today while most of this month’s cash comes from older cohorts.

- 01Anonymous visit
- 02Signup
- 03Account activation
- 04Trial
- 05First payment
- 06Renewal or expansion
The unit can change from visitor to person to account. Document those changes instead of dividing incompatible counts.
The hard part is often the handoff between systems. A website tracker sees acquisition. Authentication establishes an account. Billing confirms a payment. Decide which identifiers may be used, where they can be stored and which events may cross each boundary.
Cookieless acquisition does not automatically provide a long-lived person history. An anonymous funnel may be intentionally limited to a short window. Use it for the question it can answer, and use an appropriately governed account or cohort model for a longer conversion cycle.

- Measurement model
- Review persistence and consent settings for the SDK features you enable.
- Setup
- SDK plus event design; link revenue data to the correct people or groups.

For a subscription-first requirement, review ChartMogul’s subscription analytics instead of forcing a web report to explain every MRR movement. For organisations requiring infrastructure ownership, include Matomo’s hosting options in the shortlist. Neither choice removes the need to define acquisition and customer linkage.
Before buying, ask for the exact feature tier, retention policy, export format and event-volume definition. A free allowance is useful only if the events you need fit inside it. Account for instrumentation and operational ownership as well as the subscription price.
Start with one complete decision loop
Pick a weekly question such as “Which channel brings activated trials that become paying accounts?” Define an acquisition cohort and give it enough time to mature. Review activation, paid conversion and first-payment revenue together. Do not promote a campaign because its cheap signups have not yet had time to reveal their low paid conversion.
- Choose the unit: visitor, user, workspace or paying customer.
- Name one activation event that represents received value.
- Set a conversion window appropriate to your trial and sales cycle.
- Join payment evidence using a documented, privacy-appropriate key.
- Review unmatched data and refunds alongside the winning channel.
- Turn the result into one experiment, then revisit the same cohort definition.
Only add a tool when a valuable unanswered question justifies it. A small stack with dependable definitions is more useful than a broad stack whose charts cannot be reconciled.
